Anthropic launches PAC amid tensions with Trump administration over AI policy

Anthropic just dropped a political bombshell — they’ve launched a corporate PAC called “AnthroPAC.” This isn’t just some PR move; it’s a full-on entry into election financing as the AI policy wars heat up in Washington. The company filed with the FEC on Friday, setting up an employee-funded PAC that’ll collect voluntary contributions from staff. Under US law, individual contributions are capped at $5,000 per election cycle per candidate, and everything gets publicly disclosed. AnthroPAC is registered as a lobbyist-affiliated PAC, structured as a “separate segregated fund” — basically, it’s Anthropic’s political war chest.

Anthropic says the PAC will support candidates from both major parties, but some are already side-eyeing whether this will stay politically balanced. Critics like Alex Bruesewitz are questioning if it’ll really be bipartisan or just another Silicon Valley echo chamber.

Meanwhile, Anthropic is in a full-blown clash with the Pentagon. Back in February, the Defense Department slapped the firm with a supply chain risk designation after Anthropic opposed using its tech in fully autonomous weapons and mass surveillance. Anthropic isn’t taking this lying down — they’ve challenged the designation in court, calling it retaliation against a protected viewpoint. A federal judge in California has temporarily blocked the measure and paused broader restrictions tied to the dispute. This is getting messy, fast.

The company’s already been throwing cash around this cycle, including a $20 million contribution to Public First Action, a group focused on advancing AI safety efforts. So this PAC move isn’t their first political play — it’s just the latest escalation.

On the infrastructure front, Google is backing a multibillion-dollar data center project in Texas leased to Anthropic. The project, operated by Nexus Data Centers, could exceed $5 billion in its initial phase. Google’s expected to provide construction loans while banks compete to arrange additional financing. Demand for AI infrastructure is exploding, and Anthropic is positioning itself at the center of it all.
