Coinbase mixes crypto and tech stocks in upcoming futures index

Coinbase is dropping a bombshell with its new futures index—mixing the Magnificent 7 tech stocks (Apple, Microsoft, Alphabet, Amazon, Nvidia, Meta, Tesla) with BlackRock's Bitcoin and Ether ETFs, plus its own stock. Launching Sept. 22, this is the first US-listed derivative to blend equities and crypto in one slick product. Each component gets a flat 10% weight, and it's cash-settled monthly. Institutional clients get first dibs, with retail access coming later. CEO Brian Armstrong teased this as part of Coinbase's 'everything app' master plan, aiming to dominate the trading scene.

This move follows Coinbase's $2.9 billion acquisition of Deribit in May, turbocharging its derivatives game. Crypto derivatives volume exploded 132% YoY in 2024, and 2025 is already smashing records with over $20 trillion in Q1 and Q2. Daily volumes on Coinbase Derivatives have been consistently above $5 billion, peaking at $9.9 billion on Aug. 25—their best day since June.

Armstrong's X post hyped the launch, aligning with Coinbase's rebrand to the 'Base app' in July, which aims to fuse crypto wallets, trading, payments, and social features into one platform. Meanwhile, rival Kraken isn't sleeping—they dropped NinjaTrader in July after a $1.5 billion buy, pushing into US derivatives to compete head-on. The index will be rebalanced quarterly by MarketVector, keeping it sharp and responsive to market shifts.
