Cathie Wood drops BTC forecast by $300K, says stablecoins eroding market share
ARK Invest's Cathie Wood has cut her long-term Bitcoin price projection by $300,000, warning that stablecoins are eroding Bitcoin's role as a store of value in emerging markets.
ARK Invest's Cathie Wood just slashed her long-term Bitcoin price projection by $300K, dropping her most bullish case from $1.5M to $1.2M by 2030. The reason? Stablecoins are absolutely dominating in emerging markets, eating into Bitcoin's store-of-value role faster than anyone predicted.

"Stablecoins are usurping part of the role that we thought Bitcoin would play. Given what's happening to stablecoins, which are serving emerging markets in a way that we thought Bitcoin would, I think we could take maybe $300,000 off that bullish case, just for stablecoins. Stablecoins are scaling here, I think, much faster than anyone would have expected."

Despite the haircut, Wood remains bullish AF on Bitcoin overall, calling it a "global monetary system" that serves as digital gold — fundamentally different from stablecoins, which she describes as "cash tokenized on a blockchain."

Emerging market economies turn to stablecoins

Here's the real tea: Standard Chartered predicts stablecoins could drain over $1 TRILLION from legacy banking systems in emerging markets by 2028. Countries getting absolutely wrecked by hyperinflation, sanctions, or currency controls — looking at you, Venezuela and Argentina — are seeing residents mass-adopt dollar-pegged stablecoins to protect their purchasing power.

Venezuela's annual inflation just hit 269% in 2025 (IMF data), forcing millions to adopt Tether's USDT as their savings vehicle. With strict currency controls and a two-tiered exchange system, stablecoins have become the go-to alternative to physical dollars or bank deposits.
And the plot thickens: Reports emerged in 2024 that Venezuela's government was using stablecoins to bypass US sanctions and facilitate international oil trading. The stablecoin takeover is real, and it's happening faster than anyone expected.
