A portfolio of over 280 Bitcoin-related domain names, some registered just after the cryptocurrency’s launch in 2010, is on the auction block.
Early Bitcoin web domains from 2010 head to auction
Hold onto your hats, crypto fam — a massive collection of OG Bitcoin domains is hitting the auction block! Lloyds Auctions is slinging over 280 names, some snagged way back in 2010 right after Bitcoin dropped. This isn't just random web real estate; it's a full suite covering payments, custody, exchanges, education, and infrastructure. Think BitcoinBlockchain.com, BitcoinWallets.com, and even geo-targeted gems like JapanBitcoin.com. Speculation's high that these might be linked to the original dev crew — talk about a digital time capsule!
Lee Hames, chief operations officer at Lloyds Auctions, said: 'a full suite of digital assets that define the Bitcoin space online. The buyer won’t just own names, they’ll own the language of Bitcoin’s digital economy.'
This sale follows Lloyds' epic $3M auction of XBT.com in April — yeah, that Australian auction house is flexing hard in the digital asset game. High-value domain sales are nothing new; Voice.com went for $30M in 2019, and crypto names like BTC.com ($1M in 2014) and Crypto.com (reportedly $10-12M in 2018) have been cashing in big time. More recently, NFTs.com scored $15M in 2022, and XBT.com's sale set a new benchmark this year. Web3 domains are also in the mix, with .eth names like Paradigm.eth swapping for 420 ETH ($1.5M at the time) — proving that blockchain-based IDs are just as hot as the classics.
Crypto names join the ranks of record domain sales
Domains have always been a gold rush — short, brandable .coms like 360.com ($17M in 2015) command insane prices for that online clout. Crypto's no exception: ETH.com moved for $2M in 2017, and 2022 saw CryptoBank.com fetch $1.35M. This year, .ai and .com are dominating, but crypto.bot still pulled in $250K. It's all about that visibility and authority, and with Web3 domains like .eth from Ethereum Name Service gaining traction, the market's exploding. Unstoppable Domains is in on it too with .crypto and .nft — decentralized naming is the next big wave, potentially onboarding billions to Bitcoin.
Web3 domains gain traction alongside traditional sales
Web3 domains aren't your grandpa's URLs — they're on-chain, acting as digital IDs and wallet addresses. ENS leads the pack, but sales like 000.eth for 300 ETH (~$320K back then) show the cash flow. It's a whole new economy, blending traditional internet hustle with blockchain innovation. As adoption spikes, these names could be worth even more — so if you're eyeing that digital empire, now's the time to bid up!
