Digital euro CBDC is 'symbol of trust in our common destiny' — ECB head
European Central Bank (ECB) president Christine Lagarde released a statement on Friday touting the digital euro, a central bank digital currency (CBDC), as a unifying force in the European Union (EU) and said the ECB is aiming to launch it "as early as possible."

ECB's Digital Euro Push: Unifying Force or Digital Prison?

ECB president Christine Lagarde just dropped a statement Friday hyping the digital euro CBDC as Europe's new unifying force — and the crypto community is NOT having it. She confirmed the ECB wants this thing live "as early as possible" alongside traditional banknotes.

"As much as banknotes will continue to circulate, we want cash to be in the form of a digital euro as well. This is a big project because the euro is our currency, your currency. It brings us together. It's a symbol of trust in our common destiny, so off we go with the digital euro in the next and final phase of preparation."

The ECB governing council announced Thursday they're building the technical infrastructure to test and deploy this retail CBDC — targeting a 2029 rollout if EU lawmakers give the green light.
CBDCs are the polar opposite of crypto's permissionless, decentralized ethos. Critics are calling this a "digital prison" that could nuke civil liberties, free speech, and human rights through real-time payment surveillance.

Crypto Community Claps Back Hard

The backlash was immediate and brutal. Helius CEO Mert Mumtaz straight up told Lagarde: "Begone, witch, we're gonna use private money."
Political writer David Thunder called out the irony: "The common currency is 'a symbol of trust in our common destiny,' but creating a central bank digital currency erodes that trust by opening up the door to real-time monitoring of our payments and spending habits."
Meanwhile, European lawmakers are fighting back with actual legislation. France's Éric Ciotti (Union of the Right for the Republic) submitted a proposal Wednesday to BAN CBDCs in France entirely.
Germany's Alternative for Germany party dropped a motion in October pushing the government to consider Bitcoin as a national strategic asset — embracing BTC's decentralized, supply-capped nature over centralized CBDC control.
