Businesses are absorbing Bitcoin 4x faster than it is mined: Report

Private businesses and public companies are gobbling up Bitcoin at a rate nearly four times faster than miners can produce it, per a report from River, a Bitcoin financial services firm. This could trigger a massive supply shock if exchange reserves keep dropping and institutions hold onto their coins.

On average in 2025, these entities bought 1,755 BTC daily, while miners only churn out about 450 new BTC per day. ETFs and other investment vehicles added another 1,430 BTC daily, and governments scooped up around 39 BTC daily.

Analysts are buzzing about a potential supply shock that could send Bitcoin prices soaring. Exchange reserves are at multi-year lows, making this a bullish catalyst if the trend continues.

Bitcoin treasury companies acquired a whopping 159,107 BTC in Q2 2025, pushing total business holdings to around 1.3 million BTC. Michael Saylor's MicroStrategy leads the pack with a massive 632,457 BTC in its reserves, making it the largest known Bitcoin holder globally.

Adam Livingston, author of 'The Bitcoin Age and The Great Harvest,' says MicroStrategy is 'synthetically' halving Bitcoin through its rapid accumulation, mimicking the effects of Bitcoin's built-in halving events.

Despite the frenzy, MicroStrategy's corporate treasury officer Shirish Jajodia claims their OTC purchases don't move short-term prices, citing Bitcoin's $50 billion daily trading volume. They spread buys to avoid market impact.
