Tornado Cash co-founder faces jury after closing arguments wrap
Jurors will now decide the fate of Roman Storm, co-founder of cryptocurrency mixing service Tornado Cash, after prosecutors and the defense delivered closing arguments on Wednesday.
Jurors are now tasked with determining the future of Roman Storm, the co-founder behind the crypto mixing service Tornado Cash, following the conclusion of closing arguments by both the prosecution and defense this Wednesday.
This critical phase allows each side to encapsulate their arguments, aiming to sway the jury's decision before deliberations commence.
Storm's trial in the Southern District of New York is pivotal, potentially setting a benchmark for developer accountability regarding decentralized software exploited for illegal activities.
Facing charges of money laundering conspiracy, sanctions violations, and operating an unlicensed money-transmitting business, Storm could be looking at a 40-year prison sentence if convicted.

Prosecution claims Roman Storm is a conspirator

Assistant US Attorney Ben Gianforti, a veteran in crypto crime cases, painted Storm as a conspirator involved in 'hiding dirty money,' running 'an illegal transmitting business,' and breaching sanctions against North Korea and the Lazarus Group.
Highlighting Tornado Cash's use post-major security breaches, Gianforti pointed to $350 million moved from a sanctioned Lazarus wallet post-sanction announcements, framing the service as a 'fancy online money launderer.'

Defense claims Storm never intended to help criminals

Defense attorney David Patton countered, likening Tornado Cash to any tech tool that, while useful to criminals, isn't inherently malicious. Patton stressed the necessity of proving willful intent, arguing Storm's design was for privacy, not crime facilitation.
Patton emphasized that awareness of criminal use doesn't equate to complicity, highlighting Storm's lack of celebration over North Korean hackers' use of Tornado Cash as evidence of his innocent intentions.
