Sacrificing Ethereum’s values for mainstream adoption must stop now: Buterin
The Ethereum ecosystem’s core values of decentralization, privacy and self-sovereignty have been sacrificed in pursuit of mainstream adoption and that trend must stop now, Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin said.

Vitalik’s 2026 Manifesto: Ethereum Takes Back Its Soul

Ethereum’s been selling out for mainstream clout — and Vitalik Buterin just declared the party’s over. In a Friday X thread that hit like a crypto manifesto, the co-founder called out the ecosystem for backsliding on decentralization, privacy, and self-sovereignty. His message? 2026 is the year Ethereum stops compromising its core values for adoption.

“In 2026, no longer. Every compromise of values that Ethereum has made up to this point - every moment where you might have been thinking, is it really worth diluting ourselves so much in the name of mainstream adoption - we are making that compromise no longer.”

Buterin’s roadmap to redemption includes: private payments that don’t leak your entire financial life, making full nodes actually runnable again, and dApps that aren’t just fancy frontends for centralized servers. He also wants users to actually own their on-chain data and social recovery wallets that don’t fail when you lose your seed phrase.
The co-founder didn’t hold back on the current state: “Nodes went from easy to run to hard to run. Dapps went from static pages to complicated behemoths that leak all your data to a dozen servers.” Ouch.
Upcoming upgrades like Kohaku and the Glamsterdam fork are expected to start fixing this mess. Buterin admits it’ll be a “long road” but says it’ll make Ethereum “deserve not only its current place in the universe, but a much greater one.”

The Walkaway Test: Ethereum’s 100-Year Challenge

Earlier this week, Buterin dropped another truth bomb: Ethereum needs to pass the “walkaway test” — becoming self-sustainable without developer influence for decades. Translation: the protocol should be cryptographically safe for a century, with quantum resistance, better scaling architecture, and block-building that doesn’t centralize.

Stablecoins That Don’t Suck (And Aren’t Just USD)

Buterin also called for decentralized stablecoins that actually give people financial independence. His idea? A stablecoin backed by a diversified basket of assets and currencies — not just the US dollar — so its stability isn’t tied to a single nation’s economy.
  • Improved private payments
  • Lower barrier to running full nodes
  • DApps that don’t rely on centralized servers
  • User control over on-chain data
  • Better social recovery wallets
  • Quantum resistance features
  • More scalable architecture
  • Decentralized stablecoins backed by diversified assets
